Etsy Offsite Ads: How the Fee Works and Whether It Pays Off

Etsy Offsite Ads is Etsy's program that runs ads for your listings on other sites, like Google, Facebook, and Instagram. When a sale is attributed to one of those ads, Etsy charges an extra fee on top of your normal Etsy fees: 15% of the order total if your shop made less than $10,000 USD in any consecutive 365-day period, or a discounted 12%if it made $10,000 USD or more. Below is exactly how the fee is calculated, how to turn it off if you're eligible, and what share of your total monthly Etsy fees it actually tends to take.

The mechanics

How the Offsite Ads fee works

  • 15% feeshops that made under $10,000 USD in any consecutive 365-day period. At this threshold, participation is optional.
  • 12% feeshops that made $10,000 USD or more in any consecutive 365-day period. The rate is discounted, but participation is required and cannot be turned off.
  • $100 capthe fee never exceeds $100 per order, no matter how large the order total is. At the 15% rate, an order needs to be above roughly $666.67 before the cap starts reducing what you'd otherwise owe.
  • 30-day windowthe fee only applies if a buyer clicks the offsite ad and completes a purchase within 30 days of that click. A click with no purchase in that window costs nothing.
  • Whole orderthe fee is calculated on the full order total the ad is attributed to, not just one item in it, so a multi-item cart still gets one fee on the combined total.

Every seller is automatically enrolled in Offsite Ads from the start. Etsy reviews sales against the $10,000 threshold on an ongoing basis, and once a shop crosses it in any consecutive 365-day period, participation becomes mandatory for the lifetime of that shop, even if sales later drop back below $10,000. Opening a new shop, cutting prices, or closing and reopening a shop does not reset this.

Opting out

How to turn off Etsy Offsite Ads

You can only opt out if your shop has never made $10,000 USD or more in any consecutive 365-day period. If you're eligible, the path is:

  1. 1.Go to Shop Manager.
  2. 2.Open Settings.
  3. 3.Select Offsite Ads.
  4. 4.Choose "Opt out of Offsite Ads."
  5. 5.Confirm the choice.

If your shop later crosses $10,000 USD in a consecutive 365-day period, Offsite Ads turns back on and the option to opt out disappears for good, even if sales later fall back under that mark.

The tradeoff

Is Offsite Ads worth it?

You only pay the fee on an order Etsy actually attributes to an offsite ad click, not on every sale, so it is not a blanket tax on your shop. For a shop below the $10,000 threshold, that makes opting out a real lever: if your margins are thin, giving up the offsite traffic in exchange for keeping the full order total can be the better trade.

Once a shop is above the threshold, the choice is gone, so the more useful question for those sellers is not whether to participate but how to price around it: building the 12% into your margin on higher-ticket items where the $100 cap limits the downside, and treating low-margin items as the ones most exposed to an offsite-ad sale eating the profit.

For sellers still eligible to opt out, the honest answer is that it depends on how much of your traffic actually comes from offsite clicks versus Etsy search and your own marketing. A shop that gets little traffic from offsite ads gives up almost nothing by opting out; a shop that relies on them gives up real sales.

The number nobody quotes

What share of your fees does Offsite Ads actually take?

The 15% or 12% rate looks large on its own, but it only lands on orders Etsy attributes to an offsite ad click within 30 days. Every other order still carries the $0.20 listing fee, the 6.5% transaction fee, and payment processing, with no Offsite Ads fee at all. Offsite Ads is only one line in your fee breakdown, and for most sellers it is a small slice of total monthly fees, since it only hits the orders that came from an actual offsite ad click, not the full order count.

The only way to know your real split is to look at your own statement. The fee explainer reads your Etsy statement CSV in your browser, sorts every charge into plain categories including Offsite Ads, and shows you exactly what percentage of last month's fees it took. The file never leaves your browser and is never uploaded.

FAQ

Common questions

Can I turn off Etsy Offsite Ads?

Only if your shop has made less than $10,000 USD in any consecutive 365-day period. Go to Shop Manager > Settings > Offsite Ads and select "Opt out of Offsite Ads." Once your shop crosses $10,000 in any consecutive 365-day period, the option disappears and participation becomes mandatory for the lifetime of the shop.

What is the Etsy Offsite Ads fee?

15% of the order total if your shop made less than $10,000 USD in any consecutive 365-day period, or 12% if it made $10,000 USD or more. The fee is capped at $100 per order and only charged when an ad click leads to a purchase within 30 days.

Is the Offsite Ads fee worth it?

It depends on your margins. You only pay it on orders Etsy attributes to an offsite ad click, so for most sellers it applies to a minority of orders, not every sale. On a low-margin item the 15% or 12% cut can erase the profit; on a higher-priced item the $100 cap limits the damage.

Does opting out later undo the mandatory fee once I cross $10,000?

No. Once a shop's sales cross $10,000 USD in any consecutive 365-day period, Offsite Ads participation becomes mandatory for the lifetime of the shop, even if sales later drop back below $10,000. The rule does not reset.
