Etsy Tag Statistics 2026
We checked 1,000 realistic Etsy tags across 20 product niches against US Google search volume (DataForSEO, July 2026). The median tag draws about 4,000 Google searches per month, 52 tags (5.2%) had no measurable demand at all, and the gap between the busiest and quietest tags in the same sample is 288x. Every number below comes from that one dataset unless a source is named next to it.
- ▸The median Etsy tag draws about 4,000 Google searches per month — across 948 measured tags (US, July 2026).
- ▸5.2% of Etsy tags have zero measurable Google demand — 52 of 1,000 tags tested returned no search volume at all.
- ▸The busiest 10% of tags pull 60,500+ monthly searches; the quietest 10% pull 210 or fewer — a 288x spread inside one sample of ordinary, ungimmicky tags.
- ▸69.1% of measured tags land between 1,000 and 100,000 searches per month — the band where most specific, real product tags live.
- ▸Only 4.5% of tags cross 100,000 monthly searches — 43 of 948 measured tags.
- ▸The single busiest tags measured 673,000 searches per month — “coloring pages”, “engagement ring”, “his and hers”, and “motivational quote”, each over 160x the median tag.
- ▸“Personalized gift” alone draws 110,000 Google searches per month — generic filler tags are high-demand, not dead weight; their problem is competition, not demand.
- ▸Near-identical phrases differ up to 9x within one product type — “small gold hoops” 3,600/mo vs “waterproof gold earrings” 390/mo, both real earrings tags.
- ▸Etsy caps free accounts at 15 Marketplace Insights keyword searches per week — per Etsy's published limits, with each result kept 7 days; one listing's 13 tags nearly exhausts the weekly budget.
How Etsy tags distribute by Google demand

| 100,000+ searches/mo | 43 | 4.5% |
The busiest tags, and what generic tags really measure
The highest-demand tags in the sample, and the generic gifting phrases sellers add out of habit. The generic phrases are not low demand; they are high demand shared with every shop that can plausibly use them.

Within a single product type the spread persists: in the earrings niche, "small gold hoops" measures 3,600 searches per month, "chunky gold hoops" 2,900, "thick hoop earrings" 1,300, "gold huggie hoops" 1,000, "everyday gold earrings" 720, and "waterproof gold earrings" 390. Two sellers can fill identical tag slots in good faith and land in completely different universes of demand.
Where these numbers come from
We built a list of 1,000 realistic multi-word Etsy tags, the kind actual sellers write, spread across 20 product niches (jewelry, home decor, printables, apparel, wedding, pet goods, and more), and pulled each phrase's monthly search volume from Google Ads data via DataForSEO, US/en, in July 2026. These are Google demand figures, not Etsy's internal search counts: Etsy does not publish per-keyword search volume, so Google demand is the closest public, checkable proxy for what buyers type before landing on a listing. The main caveat is exactly that: Google searchers and Etsy searchers overlap but are not the same population, so read every figure as relative demand between phrases, not as a count of Etsy searches. The full write-up, including per-niche breakdowns, is in the complete 1,000-tag study.
