We Checked the Google Search Volume Behind 1,000 Etsy Tags

ListingDen measured Google search volume for 1,000 realistic Etsy tags across 20 product niches. The median tag pulls about 4,000 searches a month on Google, but the gap between a strong tag and a weak one is enormous: the busiest 10% of tags see 60,500 or more searches a month while the quietest 10% see 210 or fewer, a 288x spread. Google returned no volume data at all for 52 of the 1,000 tags we tested.

The honest part

Why every number here says Google, not Etsy

Etsy has never publicly released the real search-count data behind its own tags, and no research tool, including this one, has access to it. Every "Etsy search volume" figure sold by a keyword tool is a modeled estimate, not a genuine count pulled from Etsy's systems. The numbers in this study are not Etsy search volume: they're Google search volume, from Google Ads data via DataForSEO, and we label every single one that way below. Google demand is a proxy for buyer intent, a good one, but a proxy all the same.

Methodology

How we measured Etsy tag search volume

We built a list of 1,000 realistic Etsy tags across 20 product niches, jewelry, home decor, printables, apparel, wedding, pet goods and more, the kind of multi-word tags real sellers actually write, not brand names or one-off phrases. Each tag's monthly search volume comes from Google Ads search volume data via DataForSEO, US/en, pulled in July 2026. Etsy does not publish its own tag-level search numbers, so Google search demand is the closest available proxy for what buyers actually type before they land on a listing. Of the 1,000 tags, 52 returned no volume data from Google at all and were excluded from the stats below, leaving 948 measured tags.

The real thing, when you can get it

Etsy's own Marketplace Insights

If you want actual Etsy buyer-search numbers instead of a proxy, Etsy publishes some through Marketplace Insights, built into Shop Manager. Open Shop Manager, then Stats, and Marketplace Insights shows real search terms Etsy shoppers used, tied to a rolling 30-day window. Free access comes with a quota, commonly reported around 15 searches a week, so checking all 13 tags on one listing takes more than a week of free lookups, and last month's number will already be gone by the time you check again. The Google demand numbers in this study aren't a replacement for that first-party data: they're the layer that covers all 13 tag slots in one pass with no weekly limit, useful for triage before you spend a scarce Marketplace Insights search on the tag that matters most.

The distribution

Most tags land in the middle, not the extremes

Only 4.5% of measured tags cross 100,000 monthly searches on Google, and only 5.7% fall under 100. Nearly 70% of measured tags land between 1,000 and 100,000 a month, the band where most specific, real product tags live.

The spread is the story

The busiest 10% of measured tags (p90) pulled 60,500 or more searches a month on Google, while the quietest 10% (p10) pulled 210 or fewer, a 288x spread. The examples below are the actual highest and lowest tags from our 948 measured tags.

"coloring pages" alone pulls 673,000 searches a month on Google, over 160 times the median tag in our sample.

The counterintuitive finding

Generic tags aren't low demand, they're high competition

The generic filler phrases sellers add out of habit, "gift for her," "personalized gift," and similar, are not low-volume. They carry some of the biggest Google numbers in our whole dataset, higher than almost every specific product tag we measured.

Generic filler tags, Google search volume, July 2026.
Generic tagGoogle search volume
personalized gift110,000/mo on Google
handmade gift60,500/mo on Google
gift for her33,100/mo on Google
cute gift5,400/mo on Google
best friend gift1,300/mo on Google

The problem with a tag like "personalized gift" isn't that too few people search it, it's that a phrase that broad matches an enormous number of competing Etsy listings, so ranking on it is a different, harder problem than ranking on something specific. That's where the winnable middle sits: specific phrases with real but manageable Google demand, like the earrings example below.

How to use this on your own listing

STEP 1

Grade your listing free

See which of your 13 tag slots are filled with a specific phrase and which are generic filler, no signup, no cost.

STEP 2

Check the number before you commit a slot

The Writer shows the monthly Google search volume next to every tag it suggests, so you can weigh a tag before you spend one of your 13 slots on it.

STEP 3

Aim for the winnable middle

Specific phrases in the hundreds-to-low-thousands range tend to be the better trade than the single biggest number on the list.
